Carnival in Venice One of the world's most famous carnivals, the Venetian Carnival, dates to 1162. For ten days before Lent, the streets of Venice are flooded with masked people in full costume. Initially, this was a time for festivities when Venetians allowed themselves to break every law and remain anonymous while using their masks.
